Limitations of Traditional Methods

SpHb monitoring may provide additional insight between invasive blood sampling when:
- > The SpHb trend is stable and the clinician may otherwise think hemoglobin is dropping
- > The SpHb trend is rising and the clinician may otherwise think hemoglobin is not rising fast enough
- > The SpHb trend is dropping and the clinician may otherwise think hemoglobin is stable
When Considered with All Other Information, SpHb Monitoring Supports Patient-Centered Clinical Management
In this surgical case, SpHb measurements were blinded to the clinicians. Between invasive blood sampling, the clinicians could not assess changes, or lack of changes, in hemoglobin levels.3
In this post-surgical trauma case in which the patient returned to surgery, SpHb measurements were not blinded to the clinicians. Between invasive blood sampling, the clinicians could assess changes, or lack of changes, in hemoglobin levels.4

SpHb monitoring is intended to supplement, not replace, laboratory hemoglobin measurements. Blood samples should be analyzed by laboratory instruments prior to clinical decision making to completely understand the patient’s condition. SpHb accuracy has been validated on healthy adult male and female volunteers and on some surgical patients with light to dark skin pigmentations in the range of 8 g/dL to 17 g/dL. SpHb has not been validated with motion or low perfusion. The SpHb accuracy specification is calculated at one standard deviation, which encompasses approximately 68% of the measurement comparisons to a laboratory reference device. Please contact Masimo for additional testing specifications. Please note: Accuracy specifications were obtained following a specific protocol, in which all Directions for Use were followed and SpHb measurements were compared to validated laboratory reference measurements. Differences in results may be caused by many factors, such as those explained in Masimo’s Directions for Use. Some independent researchers have conducted their own testing and obtained similar results, while other researchers have reported larger differences when comparing SpHb measurements to laboratory measurements.
